With their second album, co-produced by Metal Blade's iconic mastermind Brian Slagel, Slayer elevated their game in every conceivable way. Hell Awaits marked a leap forward from their debut, delivering more graphic album art, blistering tempos, grisly lyrics, and a tighter production that amplified their raw aggression. While their debut flirted with darkness, Hell Awaits plunged headlong into truly sinister and malevolent territory.
Dave Lombardo's now-legendary double bass drumming took center stage, propelling the blistering riffs and chaotic yet precise solos of Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman. Their incendiary guitar work set a new standard for the punishing, intricate style that would inspire countless extreme metal bands in the years to come.
Bassist and frontman Tom Araya delivered snarling, guttural vocals that perfectly complemented the album's grim themes. The tracks explored the psyche of a serial killer ("Kill Again"), the chilling allure of vampires (the brooding and atmospheric "At Dawn They Sleep"), and the twisted depravity of "Necrophiliac." Slayer's knack for dynamic songwriting shone through as they varied tempos to keep the ferocity fresh and unpredictable.
